This care sheet will apply to all local species of house geckos except tokay gecko.
House Gecko Basic Overview:
Size/Length - 3 to 6 inches
Feeding Habits - Omnivorous/Opportunistic Feeder (90% animal matter 10% plant matter) small lats, winged ants, spiders, chopped SW, small amount of cooked rice, tawgi and mashed bananas are readily eaten.
Sexing - Males: produce sounds, larger and longer body, bulging tail base near cloaca. in some species, males have body markings and sometimes big, rounded patches that looks like a lump may appear in the neck just behind the ear. Females: doesn't make sounds, duller and plain coloration, shorter and stouter body with big belly area, flattened tail base near cloaca, eggs are sometimes visible when viewed underneath.
Lifespan: 2-7 years
Housing: a 2.5-gallon aquarium is suffice for 2 geckos making sure that it is 1 male and 1 female or 2 females. never house 2 male house geckos together. make sure there are lots of branches and artificial/live plants that can climb or hide to avoid seeing your gecko sticking to the cover or sides of your tank. provide at least 1 hiding spot.
Substrate: leaf litter, coco peat, sphagnum moss, gravel, sand, colored paper
Temperature: room temperature. it can tolerate air-conditioned temps for short amounts of time.
Humidity:70-95% relative humidity but providing a moist substrate and placing a small water dish is enough to keep them hydrated.
Lighting: avoid using UV lighting to prevent burns but direct morning sun is highly appreciated.
Geckos are prolific egg-layers usually laying 2-4 eggs in a secluded spot, 2-3 times a year but young should be separated once hatched to avoid being eaten.
