Hermit Crab ICU

(based on my honest mistake and little understanding of hermit needs)


so just recently, my land hermit crab got dehydrated.

signs & symptoms:

lethargy / inactivity
-they barely move even at night when they're suppose to be active.

drooping eyes
- unparalleled eye stalk movement, one is up the other is down or both eyes down.

frothy bubbles
- the production of bubbles could either mean your hermit is in breeding season (these maybe spermatophores) or a substance to prevent them from drying out. try to determine the smell. a slightly rubbery smell or no smell is normal.

leaving the shell
- if your hermit leaves it's shell for more than 6 hours and doesnt return to any shell offered, just try to moisten its soft inner body with warm water before manually returning it inside a shell.


steps to take:

hydrate your hermit immediatly!
- soak its exposed body parts in freshwater for 5 minutes for freshwater hermits and 5 minutes in saltwater for saltwater types.

- put your hermit in a homemade ICU. get a smaller container enough for your hermit to fit and fill it with half centimeter of
freshwater (or depending on the hermit size). place your hermit and cover it a lid with a few holes for sufficient ventilation. place this 'icu' somewhere humid like inside your kitchen cabinets or under the sink.

so far my hermit made full recover after 48 hours of hydrating treatment.

don't make the same mistake as i did.

matigas kasi sobra ang exoskeleton nila kaya matagal makapenetrate ang moisture. di rin naman kasi pwedeng laging basa ung gills at ung soft, inner body nila
