Sub-family: Avicularinae
Genus: Tapinauchenius
species: gigas, cupreus, violaceus, subcaeruleus, etc.
Type: New World.
Habitat: Arboreal
Temperment: Extremely fast, can be skittish and can be defensive.
Growth/Size: 4 to 4 1/2", Gigas may make it to 5.5"
Experience Level: Intermediate
Handling: NO
Temperature: 72-80 will do just fine in my experience.
Humidity: 70-85% should do just fine, they're fairly tough for an arboreal.
Enclosure: Not a lot needed for these, height is more important than
floorspace, a 5 gallon or large KK on it's side will be far more than it
will ever need. You may also use a large (14" or taller) jar with at
least 7-8" of floorspace.
Substrate: Eco Earth, ORGANIC potting soil (remove any wood), others may be suitable.
Diet: Crickets, Roaches, worms...basic tarantula diet will suffice quite nicely.
Water: Offer a dish, but misting now and then will also help as these
are an Avicularinae sub-family Tarantula and will often choose
mist-drinking over a dish.
Lifespan: 12-18 years
Maturity of Female: 12-14 months, males have tibial apop on first set of legs.
Color/Markings: Many species will have "dimples" on the abdomen, but
some will not in the case of gigas. Coloring for most (aside from gigas)
is a true iridescent, IE metallic and color changes with light and
angle.
Wild: French Guiyana for violaceus, gigas and plumipes, Ecuador for Subcaeruleus.
Special notes: This is probably the fastest genus of Tarantula on the
planet, gigas probably being the fastest of them all due to having
larger legs with a similar body size to the rest. Though they can be
defensive, they are a new world Tarantula lacking both urticating hairs
and the ability to stridulate, and thus have a very mild venom. These
are a good speed-arboreal to begin with if one is interested in
Poecilotheria, Lampropelma, or Cyriopagopus style T's but is intimidated
by the size and potency of venom.
