| On the topic of mites infestation, sadly my Ts have also fallen victim to this pest. In my caring for Ts, may mga observations din ako about how mites behave. This is my experience/theory.THIS IS MEANT TO HELP and BENEFIT the hobby. If you find that some of the things written here are not applicable, please don't use/do it. I will just be sharing my personal observations and proposals.Observations:
1. Mites love the moist substrate, and in fact they don't survive on a dry substrate set-up. They love water and they easily dehydrate.
2. Most victims are arboreals belonging to the Avicularia/Psalmopoeus/Tapinauchenius species. This may be because hobbyists make sure they have moist substrates for humidity and survival requirements.
3. On one occassion, I found some small white mite-like organisms dead inside a Tapinauchenius plumipes water dish. The reason they swam in the water was because I accidentally left my substrate dry. My neglect.
Check these pictures for evidence. Akala ko nung una itlog. hehe Mites pala.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
4. I have raised some avics on dry substrate. Maybe because in the Philippines, we have a naturally higher humidity compared to our foreign counterparts. In the absence of a gadget to measure humidity, I will not be able to validate my claim. Again this is based purely on observation.
PROPOSALS:
1. When you notice you got mites in oe of your enclosures/Ts immediately do the following:
a. isolate the Tarantula. Put him/her in a separate rack/cabinet para di makahawa. b. rehouse the Tarantula using dry substrate. Put a filled-up water dish inside to attract the mites c. check the neighboring enclosures for similar infestations. Sana wala.
2. Some arboreal Ts would create a web hammock sa higher portion ng enclosure. We think they are safe from mites infestation since the mites are stuck at the bottom, thriving on the substrate. WRONG. Kahit pa nasa taas yun Tarantula, they can sometimes fall to the substrate while molting or try to visit the substrate and when we least expect it, ayun. Mite attack.
3. Let your substrates dry out every now and then. Keep them dry for a week. Just make sure may water dish yun Tarantula para di sya ma-dehydrate. This will help lessen mite survival and makakaiwas din sa moulds.
4. Put a basin or palanggana filled with water nearby. The water that evaporates from the basin will contribute to the higher humidity not only inside the enclosures but outside. This will increase the probability of your T surviving.
Yun na lang muna. Pag may dagdag kayo, don't hesistate to comment.
HAPPY T-KEEPING!!! | |

| napansin ko din na pag well ventilated yung enclosure, less ang mites. can't be too sure though. but its seems to be working good for me. | |

- Bro,
I don't claim to be an expert at di ko din inaral ito.
But based on what I experience, tama na desert dry ang substrate ng brachypelmas. In fact, that is the recommended set-up. Just make sure you occassionally put a water dish lalo na sa mga malalaki na.
The water dish is not a solution for humidity. Its a preventive against thirst and dehydration ng ating mga alaga.
Bro,
As I mentioned, mas mataas ang humidity natin sa Pinas compared to other countries.
The water that evaporates from the basin will serve to increase humidity.
Hope this helps.
You can visit my place and check my set-up. | |
