Californian King Snake
scientific name: Lampropeltis getulus california

Geographical Extension: Southwest Oregan, through California to Baja California. South Utah and Nevada and Western Arizona
Habitat: Forest areas, deserts but also agricultural areas
Size: up to 130 cm
Life Expectancy: over 15 years
Reproduction: 5-10 eggs. Incubation period at 28°C approx. 60-70 days. A short resting period at 10-15°C is recommended for breeding.
Temperature: air temperature between 25-28°C, local heat spots up to 33°C. Night setback to about 20-23°C.
Humidity: 50-60%
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes
Substrate: loamy soil with rock structures or grit..
Cage Furniture: hideouts, stones, roots among other things climbing facilities, a small flat water bowl. Planting is possible (Aloe sp., Euphorbia sp. etc.)
Terrarium Size (for long term care): Minimum requirement 1x0.5x0.5 (LxWxH) of the overall length of the animal for one pair. At least 120x50x50 are recommended.
Food: mice of appropriate sizes, small lizards and snakes
Comment: Should not be tended together as they eat other snakes!

Checkered Garter Snake

Geographical Extension: From Southern North-America to Mexico, isolated populations also in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica
Habitat: from dry to semiarid grass sceneries, near bodies of water. Diurnal
Size: 50-100 cm
Life Expectancy: over 10 years
Reproduction: viviparous, 6-18(31) young animals
Temperature: air temperature between 20-25°C at day, at night as low as under 20°C. Local sun spots up to 33°C.
Humidity: about 60-70%
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes
Substrate: loose, absorptive substrate.
Cage Furniture: water bowl, climbing facilities, gravel, hiding places.

Common Egg Eater
scientific name: Dasypeltis scabra

Geographical Extension: Parts of Africa (among other things South-Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, Somalia, as far as West-, East-, Central- and South-Africa)
Habitat: dry bush and forest regions
Size: 50-70 cm, maximum 120 cm
Reproduction: lays up to 18 eggs. Incubation period at 30°C about 60-70 days.
Temperature: air temperature between 25-28°C, locally up to 33°C. Night setback to about 20°C.
Humidity: 40-50%
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes
Substrate: loamy soil with rock structures.
Cage Furniture: hideouts, stones, roots among other things climbing facilities, a small flat water bowl. Planting is possible (Ficus benjamina, F. pumila, Scindapsus etc.).
Food: depending on its size; eggs of canaries, budgerigars or European quails
Comment: If the problem with the food supply has been solved the Dasypeltis scabra is as a rule an easy to tend animal.

Habitat: from deciduous forests to dry savannahs, crepuscular
Size: approx. 80-130 cm
Life Expectancy: over 20 years
Reproduction: lays 20-30 eggs, 2 clutches per year are possible. Incubation period at 27°C about 60 days.
Temperature: ground temperature between 26-28°C, local heat spots up to 33°C. Night setback to 20-23°C.
Humidity: 50-70%
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes
Substrate: loose, absorptive substrate.
Cage Furniture: hideouts, stones, roots and other climbing facilities. Planting is possible (Ficus benjamina, Scindapsus etc.). Flat water bowl.
Terrarium Size (for long term care): Minimum requirement 1x0.5x1 (LxWxH) of the overall length of the animal for one pair. At least 150x60x120 are recommended.
Food: mice of appropriate sizes
Comment: Many colour variations are available through breeding by now. The different colour variations of Corn Snakes can be tended together without problems.

Size: approx. 50-70 cm females up to 100 cm
Life Expectancy: over 15 years
Reproduction: viviparous, about 3-26 young animals
Temperature: air temperature between 20-25°C at day, at night as low as under 20°C. Local sun spot up to 33°C.
Humidity: about 60-70%, dry spots are essential
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes
Substrate: loose, absorptive substrate.
Cage Furniture: large water bowl, possibly an aqua-terrarium. Climbing facilities, gravel, hiding places
Food: small fish, earthworms, slugs and on the rare occasion freshly born mice
Comment: Several of them can be tended together without problems.

Long-nosed Snake

Geographical Extension: From South-west America to South-Mexico (Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, to Mexico)
Habitat: dry and open prairies, bush areas. Crepuscular and nocturnal
Size: 55-100 cm
Life Expectancy: over 20 years
Reproduction: 4-9 eggs. Incubation period at 28°C about 60-90 days.
Temperature: air temperature between 25-28°C, locally up to 33°C. Night setback to about 23-25°C.
Humidity: 50-60%
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes
Substrate: loose, absorptive substrate. More cage substrate should be used for filling as this species likes it to dig itself in.
Cage Furniture: Climbing facilities, various hiding places and a water container make up the basic configuration of the terrarium arrangements.
Food: Small rodents (freshly born mice and rats), eats also lizards, their eggs and small snakes

Reproduction: lays up to 12 eggs, but generally only 5-7. Incubation period at 27°C about 50-60 days.
Temperature: air temperature between 24-27°C, local heat spots to 32°C. Night setback to about 20°C.
Humidity: 50-80%
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes
Substrate: loose, absorptive substrate.
Cage Furniture: climbing facilities, various hiding places and a water container make up the basic configuration of the terrarium arrangements.
Food: various insects and other arthropods (crickets, small grasshoppers, inchworms, spiders etc.).
Comment: The Smooth Green Snake (O. vernalis) is only rarely cultivated

Reproduction: multiple clutches per year, on average 5 eggs (3-11) per clutch. Incubation period at 26-29°C about 65-75 days.
Temperature: ground temperature between 25-28°C, local heat spots up to 32°C. Night setback to 20-24°C.
Humidity: 60-80%
Lighting: Daylight fluorescent tubes
Substrate: loose, absorptive substrate.
