PostSubject: bonding with sugar gliders...   Sugar - bonding with sugar gliders... I_icon_minitimeSun May 02, 2010 5:09 pm

One of the most rewarding parts of your experience with your Sugar Glider is bonding!

When a Sugar Glider has bonded PROPERLY to its new family, it can be one of the most INCREDIBLY rewarding experiences that ANY owner could ever have. The truth is, Sugar Gliders are one of the most LOVING little creatures you could ever own – and that’s one of the main reasons why they are gaining SO much popularity lately. So, with that in mind, let’s cover a few IMPORTANT tips on how to get your new baby Sugar Gliders to become your BEST FRIEND!

First off, how well your Sugar Glider will ultimately bond to you is largely determined by how much time you spend with it during the first couple weeks that it is in your home. This is so important, we're going to repeat it. Again, how WELL your Sugar Glider will ultimately bond to you is largely determined by how much time you spend with it during the first couple weeks that it is in your home.

Before we dive in, I want to be clear that the bonding tips included in this free report are just the “basics”. Over the years, we have learned many other VERY effective – specific - tricks that will help your baby bond with you, but it would take too long to go through all these in this basic report. Therefore, we have created a whole handful of written Special Reports AND Instructional Video Clips JUST on the topic of “bonding” that are available to all our customers 24 hours a day in the Family Circle section of our website. Remember, if you have just purchased your Sugar Glider, it takes approximately one day to get your information into our system, so you should be able to log-in within 24 hours.

OK, that being said, let’s get back to the basics

First off, how WELL your Sugar Glider will ultimately bond to you is largely determined by how much time you spend with it during the first few weeks that it is in your home. Now, what this means is that the more time you can spend with it – even if it’s just sleeping in a bonding pouch around your neck or in a pocket – the FASTER and DEEPER your new baby will bond to you. For example, if you are just now bringing your new baby(ies) home for the first time, we strongly suggest that you do NOT even TRY to hold them for the first two days they are with you. Instead, when you get home, just set up the cage exactly like it says in the free report entitled: Cage Setup. Then, holding the pouch inside the cage, unzip it and gently fold it inside out so that the babies are pushed out into their new cage. From there, just let them “be” for the next two days so they can start getting used to all the new smells, sights and surroundings in their new home. This really helps them to kind of “de-stress” before you start bonding with them. During these two days, all you have to do is just make sure they have food and water – and READ through the first 10 Special Reports that are located in the Family Circle Section of our website. By doing this, at the same time your baby is “de-stressing”, you will be arming yourself with a tremendous amount of knowledge that will greatly speed up the entire bonding process.

Now, having said all that, once the first two days have passed, the MOST important thing to remember when first starting to hold your new baby is to NOT… BE… AFRAID... OF... IT… and the BEST way to do that is to understand how a baby Sugar Glider THINKS during this bonding process. What this means is that before you try to start bonding with your new baby, you first have to understand that the two most important things running through its little mind are SAFETY and SECURITY – and the main ways that it feels safe and secure are through SMELL and TOUCH.

Again, the two most powerful senses that a baby Sugar Glider uses to make decisions about its safety are SMELL and TOUCH, so let’s cover them one at a time…

SMELL
First off, as your baby gets a little older, it will start to recognize you by sight and the sound of your voice – but in the beginning, they will be relying primarily on your SMELL. Therefore, the more time they spend right up against your body – like in a pocket or a bonding pouch- the faster they will get used to your smell. Again, the bottom-line is that the more time you spend together, the faster your new baby will learn to trust you…

So, with THAT in mind. Here’s a neat little trick that can dramatically shorten the “trusting” process – at least as far as smell goes… Whenever your new baby Sugar Glider is in its cage, simply put a small piece of your clothing (make sure it has your smell on it) in the cage with them on the heat rock. Generally speaking, since you want them to get used to your scent as quickly as possible, the more this piece of clothing SMELLS like you the better, so you could say that in THIS case, “body odor” can actually be a good thing!

Now, when it comes to this little trick, keep in mind that this works for EVERYBODY in your family, not just you. Generally speaking, as long as the articles are fairly small pieces of cloth or clothing that won’t UNRAVEL, it’s a good idea to put a little something in the cage from everybody in the family. This way they get a head start on trusting everyone – and no, the different scents will not in any way “confuse” your baby.

Once again, you’ve got to use common sense here, so don’t just pack their cage full of dirty laundry – but the general idea is that the more your new baby Sugar Glider can smell the people who make up its new family, the faster and easier it will be for them to start bonding with the family.

Now, you might have noticed that we've been using the word "trust" a lot over the last few paragraphs, and that’s not by accident. If there is any one word that could describe the goal of what you want to accomplish during the first couple weeks that your new baby is in your home, it would be that you want to EARN ITS TRUST…

Here’s what we mean by that. In the wild, the harsh reality is that Sugar Gliders only live about 5 to 6 years on average – or less than HALF as long as they can live in captivity. Think about that for a moment. Why do you think that is?

Well, the MAIN reason is that other animals EAT them! Let’s face it, they’re pretty tiny… they can’t crawl around real fast…and they don’t have big scary claws or teeth – so in the wild, they’re pretty much the BOTTOM of the food chain – and because of that, they are INSTINCTIVELY SCARED of just about ANYTHING that’s bigger than they are – INCLUDING YOU AND ME.

So, if Sugar Gliders are so vulnerable out in the wild, how DO they defend themselves? Well the answer is pretty funny really…

The truth is, about the only defense mechanism that Sugar Gliders have – and they do it very well – is that they can put on a big “SHOW” whenever they get scared and ACT REALLY TOUGH, and sometimes they can come across as pretty darn scary to somebody who doesn’t know what’s REALLY going on. In fact, one interesting tidbit of lesser-known trivia about Sugar Gliders is that in some countries, Sugar Gliders are sometimes called "Sugar Gliders". The reason is this: if you can picture in your mind how a bear stands up on its back legs and roars when it gets mad, Sugar Gliders are able to do almost EXACTLY the same thing.

So, the simple fact is that when a baby Sugar Glider gets scared, it will usually make a very loud and startling "chattering" noise, and then swipe its paws at you like a bear. Sometimes, if it’s REALLY scared, or just not used to human contact at all yet, it may even nip at you a few times. If this happens, the MOST important thing to remember here is that: 1) it’s ALL an act, and 2) everything they are doing is DEFENSIVE – not offensive – because they are just scared. As far as a baby’s bite goes, if you should ever happen to experience it, their tiny jaws and teeth are so small that it really only feels like a firm “pinch” and RARELY – if ever – breaks the skin.

In other words, if your new baby acts aggressive and starts chattering, … just put yourself in their shoes for a second and remember they are just a SCARED… LITTLE… BABY… trying to act tough, and that's ALL.

TOUCH
Now that we've looked at how to help your baby Sugar Glider feel safe by using its sense of smell, let’s talk about TOUCH, because oddly enough, holding your baby very tightly and rubbing it firmly when it does get scared is by FAR the best way to calm it right down and start the bonding process.

In order to understand why, again, you have to put yourself in this little guy’s shoes for a second when it comes to what a Sugar Glider perceives as SAFETY. Since it is a Marsupial – and a BABY one at that – you need to remember that practically its WHOLE life up to now has been spent inside its mother's pouch. Now, ask yourself this question… If you had to imagine what it would be like to live in a pouch like that, how would it feel?

Well, the answer is three things, WARM…TIGHT… and DARK… and as you start the bonding process with your new little baby, the more times you can make them feel this way (warm, tight and dark), the FASTER they will learn to trust you.

Luckily, this is a pretty straight forward and relatively quick process that – once again – largely boils down to the amount of time you spend with your new baby. Chances are, when you got your new baby Sugar Glider from PocketPets, you also purchased one or more of our special Walkabout bonding pouches that we sell. These little pouches are VERY appropriately named, because they are designed so that you can wear them around almost anywhere, and they provide your baby with a DARK and fairly small environment where they can feel the warmth of your body (and start getting used to your scent too). The best way to think of it is that it’s kinda like the CAR SEAT you bring your baby home in – and for the first few weeks you have them, they’ll be spending a LOT of time in it!

Once your Sugar Glider is up against your body in a pouch like this – or a pocket – all you have to do then is start FIRMLY TOUCHING them. The best way to do this is to start by rubbing the OUTSIDE of the pouch or pocket gently (but FIRMLY) and then, as your baby starts to trust you more, just move your fingers or hand to the inside of the pouch or pocket and keep SLOWLY and FIRMLY petting them.

Now, again, DON'T be scared of your new baby Sugar Glider if it starts to chatter or even nip a little when you first reach into the pouch or pocket. Getting your little boy or girl to TRUST you is going to be a process – not an EVENT – and even though it will take a few days, taking the time to do it properly NOW will pay a LIFETIME of dividends later…

Now, for a lot of people who have never been around a Sugar Glider before, they say that the chattering noise is really probably the most startling thing about these little animals – in that it’s amazing such a LOUD and unusual sound can come out of such a tiny little creature.

With that in mind, it's important to remember exactly what we're about to tell you, because it will 1) help you understand how your baby Sugar Glider is feeling, 2) remind you of EXACTLY how to use this opportunity to help them TRUST you more, and 3) almost INSTANTLY take away any startled or scared feeling you might have when your baby Sugar Glider suddenly starts to CHATTER.

What you need to remember is this: ANY time you hear your little baby start to chatter, what they are really saying is…”HOLD ME TIGHTER…RUB ME HARDER…. I’M SCARED!"

Again, remember, ”HOLD ME TIGHTER…RUB ME HARDER…. I’M SCARED!"

Now, by the time you are reading this, you may have already experienced what we're talking about, and if that's the case, you know how TRUE it is.

For example, the next time your little baby gets scared and starts to chatter, just put your hand up against it if it’s in a pouch or pocket, and press down on him or her FIRMLY. What you’ll find is that as you press down more firmly, at some point your baby Sugar Glider will just calm right down, and the sound will stop.

Now, having said that, the single most common mistake new “moms & dads” make is that they CUP their hand when they are pressing down on their baby – thinking that they are being HUMANE and giving it ROOM to breathe. When they do this, not only does the baby usually NOT stop crying – but lots of times it even becomes louder, because deep-down (even though they are ACTING tough) what they REALLY want is to be “squished” just like they used to be in their mom’s pouch. Therefore, whenever your baby starts “crying”, just FLATTEN your hand out, and then press DIRECTLY down on them. Now, I’ll warn you right now, you will SWEAR that you are crushing them, but trust me, they’ll be just fine. They are used to being in VERY tight spaces that you would think would crush them, but they absolutely LOVE being squeezed. In fact, the way you’ll know you’ve pressed down hard enough is that they’ll stop crying.

The same thing works equally well if you are already HOLDING your baby in your hands and they start to chatter. As soon as it starts, just cover them up FIRMLY with both hands, – including their little head…FLATTEN OUT your hands as much as possible… and start to SQUEEZE down on them. In a few seconds, they’ll calm right down.

Now, in case you’re wondering, the reason why squeezing them like this calms them down almost INSTANTLY goes right back to what we talked about earlier…. in that the three things that make a baby Sugar Glider feel SAFE are darkness, warmth, and being in a tight place. In other words, the more you press down on them and cover up their head when they’re scared, the more they INSTANTLY feel like they are right back in their mama’s POUCH, and the more they start to associate YOUR smell and the warmth of YOUR body with their mother's pouch. Once they start feeling like this, the bonding process is well on its way!

Just remember, the goal in bonding with your baby Sugar Glider to get them to TRUST you. All of the chattering noises will stop once they feel safe in your hands. Therefore, there is no substitute for holding them in your hands A LOT – especially at first. The bonding PROCESS begins once your baby feels totally at ease in your hands. Again, hold him or her securely and firmly in your hands, and rub them gently but firmly with your thumbs. Just like most people, Sugar Gliders LOVE to be “massaged” – so have at it!

By the way, new little babies will almost always RESIST this for a few minutes, but soon they realize that all this rubbing feels pretty GOOD! If you keep rubbing them, after just a few short minutes they will start grasping your moving thumb with their little hands…their eyes will begin drooping… and a few seconds later they will usually fall ASLEEP right in your hands. This is GREAT, and when they goes to sleep in your hands you know you are on the right track. As you continue to RUB and LET your baby sleep, they start to STRONGLY associate your hands with SAFETY and SECURITY – and that’s EXACTLY what you want!. If you repeat this process in several sessions over the first few days, don’t be surprised if pretty soon your Sugar Glider starts to get QUITE bonded to you.

TWO more quick things on how to handle a couple specific BONDING situations and then we’re done!

First, remember that the FIRST few times you reach into your pocket or bonding pouch to pick up your new baby Sugar Glider, it helps to just EXPECT ahead of time that he or she may get defensive and start making that chattering noise. If that happens, just put yourself in its shoes for a second and remember, it does not know you yet – all it sees is a really bright light, and a HUGE hand coming at it out of nowhere!

Again, the most important thing is just to NOT be afraid, and remember that the more FIRMLY you pick your baby Sugar Glider up and HOLD them, the MORE SAFE they will feel. With that in mind, don’t try to pick him or her up gently with your fingertips, because this will only make them feel even more insecure. Instead…CONFIDENTLY reach QUICKLY into the pouch and scoop your baby up in one hand while SUPPORTING the pouch or pocket from beneath with the other. Then, as soon as you get it out of the pocket or pouch, just cover it up with BOTH HANDS – including its head – and start rubbing it firmly just like we talked about earlier. After a few days of consistent bonding, this probably won’t happen anymore when you open the pouch, because it will know you and start loving you!

Now, this EXACT same thing also holds true for when you take your baby out of its cage every day. One of the biggest advantages of having a heat rock in your cage is that your Sugar Gliders will almost always sleep under whatever you put on it. Now, by contrast, if your Sugar Glider sleeps in a more CONFINED area, like a sock or a hanging pouch or a nest box, it’s often a BIG ordeal in the beginning to wake them up and get them out of the sleeping area. That’s WHY we do NOT sell pouches or “boxes” that hang INSIDE the cage – and DEFINITELY DO NOT recommend that you ever get one of these. Putting a “nesting pouch or box” inside the cage make it VERY hard to pick your baby up – and it creates a tremendous amount of UNECESSARY TRAUMA on both the baby - and you. The simple fact is that if it doesn’t want to wake up (which it usually won’t in the beginning), it will hang onto the inside of that pouch like VELCRO – and do everything it can to resist coming out. Obviously, this starts your bonding session out on a sour note – so again, NEVER put a “nesting pouch” or nesting BOX inside the cage.

By contrast, when you follow our instructions and use a towel or some piece of clothing draped over a heat rock, 99% of the time when you go to pick up your baby, it will be under it. Just gently pat the cloth until you locate the baby and then QUICKLY and CONFIDENTLY scoop the WHOLE thing up – cloth…baby.. and all! This way they are still surrounded by the nice warm cloth that smells familiar to them – and there’s no muss or fuss. From there – still keeping them covered – just ROLL them right into their pouch or your hands. Now, since it normally takes a few seconds for them to fully wake up anyway , by following these directions they will wake up IN YOUR HANDS or their pouch without all the stress and struggle.

Now, this report has spent a lot of time talking about bonding and not being AFRAID of your new baby – but in all reality, it’s not nearly as bad as it may seem here. The GOOD news is that this whole process really doesn’t take very long, and once your baby Sugar Glider IS bonded to you and your family, you can take them with you almost ANYWHERE and they’ll NEVER want to leave you.
